The ostreid herpesvirus(OsHV-1) is one of the major diseases that affect the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas. Selective breeding programs were recently shown to improve resistance easily to OsHV-1 infections in spat, juvenile, and adult oysters. Nevertheless, this resistance has never been investigated in larvae, whereas this developmental stage has crucial importance for the production of commercial hatcheries, as well as explaining the abundance of spatfall. A first trial tested several viral suspensions at several concentrations using contaminated water with OsHV-1 in 4- and 10-day-old larvae that we reproduced from an unselected broodstock. In follow up on the results, one viral suspension at a final concentration of 10+6 OsHV-1 DNA copies per L was... |

The schooling behavior of Hyla semilineata Spix, 1824 tadpoles is described. Experiments were carried out both in the natural environment and under controlled conditions to quantify the constant movement of these tadpoles. Bullfrog tadpoles (Rana catesbeiana Shaw, 1802), similar in size to the H. semilineata larvae, were used as controls in the experiments. Hyla semilineata tadpoles remained stationary for one sixth of the time that the bullfrog tadpoles did and the number of individuals of H. semilineata moving at any given moment was about seven times greater. The schooling behavior and constant swimming behavior of these tadpoles may enhance the effect of their warning coloration. |

Using a continuous breeding of T. brevicornis the authors try to approach an experimental procedure in order to estimated the effects of thermal stresses on larvae produced by ovigerous females. In spite of the main factor driving to successful breeding was the healthiness of algal food, sublethalt or inhibitory effects were observed with duration were only observed to LT 50 level. On opposite, decrease in nauplii production is noted just after ovigerous females are exposed to 35 degree C of final temperature. |

Innovative techniques opened new perspectives in the larviculture or the Asian seabass in the 1980s. Induced spawning maximized egg production while sperm preservation reduced the problem of male brood-stock supply. Studies of biometric characteristics of the fish larvae resulted in improved feeding strategies with live food. This in turn permitted a more rational use of expensive Artemia nauplii. Nutritional enhancement of the highly unsaturated fatty acid (HUFA) composition of the life food resulted in significant improvement of survival and physiological condition of the larvae of the metamorphosis. A salinity stress test enabled the evaluation of the larvae's physiological status and estimation of their HUFA-requirements during the... |

Monitoring of reproduction in the oyster Crassostrea gigas, and more particularly in the mussel Mytilis edulis were conducted, in the Marennes-Oléron Bay each year, from June to September. This report gives the main results obtained in 1997, 1998, 1999,2000 and compares the results between years. It also summarises the fishing techniques used and gives information on larval development in the annexes. NOT CONTROLLED OCR |

Target areas for Ucides cordatus (Linnaeus, 1763) restocking programs are often located far from the laboratory where larval rearing is developed. During translocation, the larvae are submitted to highly stressful conditions due to handling, packing, and transport activities. The aim of the present study was to assess the mortality rates of U. cordatus megalopae caused by different transportation procedures. Megalopae at loading densities of 50, 150, and 300 ind.L-1 were packed in double polyethylene 12 x 25 cm plastic bags with 200 ml of marine water at salinity 30. The bags were filled with oxygen at a proportion of 1:2 parts of water and sealed tightly. The trepidations during transport were simulated by the use of a shaker device (800... |

The slipper shell snail Crepidula fornicata forms dense assemblages along much of the European coast, where it co-occurs with oysters. We examined the susceptibility of slipper shell larvae to predation by suspension-feeders, including adults of their own species. In particular, we compared filtration rates on phytoplankton with those on larvae, and determined the extent to which consumption of larvae varied with adult size, larval size, and with the presence of alternative food (phytoplankton). We also examined the ability of competent larvae to metamorphose successfully in the presence of feeding adults. For each experiment, adults were held in plastic jars with seawater or phytoplankton suspension and allowed to graze on larvae (101 larvae per jar) for... |

The influence of interaction between light intensity and tank wall colours on survival and growth of perch larvae (Perca fluviatilis L.) was investigated for 15 days after hatching. Three light intensities (250, 400 and 800 Ix) and four wall colours (black, dark grey, light grey and white) were used. At the end of the experiment, survival rates ranged between 1% and 26%, and varied according to the different treatments (P = 0.0001; df = 11). A global effect of light intensity was detected(P = 0.0001; df = 2) and the highest survival rate was observed under 250 Ix. Survival was also influenced by the tank wall colour(P = 0.0001; df = 3): light grey showed the best result (17%). The greatest growth in weight and length was observed in tanks with light grey... |

In France, spatfall of Pacific Oysters occurs traditionally in two shellfish area of the south west of France: the Marennes-Oléron bay and the Arcachon basin. The spat collected in both sites ensures approx. 70 % of the need of the French oysters production (the other part is produced in hatcheries). But, since ten years, recruitment have become highly variable especially in Arcachon basin. For instance, in this site, spatfall (assessed at the end of the reproductive season) can vary between 50 oysters per collector to more than 20 000 oysters per collector (Figure 1). This huge variation arise questions from oysters producers and the French National Committee for Shellfish Culture want to get some explanations of the phenomenon. It is well known that... |

Harmful algal blooms are a threat to aquatic organisms and coastal ecosystems. Among harmful species, the widespread distributed genus Alexandrium is of global importance. This genus is well-known for the synthesis of paralytic shellfish toxins which are toxic for humans through the consumption of contaminated shellfish. While the effects of Alexandrium species upon the physiology of bivalves are now well documented, consequences on reproduction remain poorly studied. In France, Alexandrium minutum blooms have been recurrent for the last decades, generally appearing during the reproduction season of most bivalves including the oyster Crassostrea gigas. These blooms could not only affect gametogenesis but also spawning, larval development or juvenile... |

It is well known that in pejerrey water temperature not only affects growth rates but also directs the sexual differentiation process. This fact rise the question of how different the development of pejerrey larvae of the same age is when reared at different temperatures. A description of developmental stages for the embryonic and larval periods of the pejerrey, Odontesthes bonariensis, and the influence of rearing temperature on larval development are presented. Then, larval development was studied at three rearing temperatures, and changes in general morphology, fin morphology, and caudal fin structure have been taken into consideration within the thermal range involved in the temperature sex determination of this species. Fin fold reabsorption, caudal... |
